Soup Bone/ Beef Marrow Bone

Roxie and Her Bone

My name is Roxie. I am a 1 1/2 year old puppy and I like to chew things so one day, my Mommy gave me a soup bone to chew on. Everything was going okay until I got so excited that I got the bone stuck on my bottom jaw. I was very upset and couldn't get it off so my Mommy, Daddy, and I went to visit the staff at AECWH. They told us that I was not alone! This is a common problem that they see. After examining me, the Doctor did a quick blood test to make sure I was okay for anesthesia, then I was sedated and the bone was removed. Luckily for me, the bone was pulled off with some manipulation, and with no underlying damage to my teeth or gums.

The Doctor warned us that many times these bones have to be cut off with bone cutters or a Dremel tool.  Some dogs need to take antibiotics or pain medications because of the damage caused by the soup bones. My mommy and I have now learned that chewing on hard bones is the #1 cause of fractured teeth in dogs. Chewing bones can also cause diarrhea, pancreatitis, or worse, a piece of bone can splinter and cause an intestinal obstruction! I had no idea! I am thankful to have been so lucky, and from now on it's only Kong chew toys for me! I love my bones but it's just not worth the risk. Besides, I want to keep my teeth nice and healthy for all my puppy close-up photos!
